Holiday Munchies!

A belated Merry Christmas to you all!
What a busy time of year this was!  I went to a few Christmas celebrations and brought a few appetizers to share.
The first party was at my sisters, I brought my Lumpia to share that went over very well and got gobbed up!



Next would be a trip to my uncles where of course I was asked to bring a couple appetizers, go figure!



I brought with Amy Thielen's Onion Chip Dip and I turned my new Wild Rice Stuffed Jalepenos from this summer, into Stuffed Mushrooms!



My last party was with my husband's side and that was a brunch, my mother in law brought a nummy cheese ball,one of these days I need to get a recipe for.  I made a brunch.

Today is all day football with the hubbie, I will be making Street Corn Nacho's!  I can't wait to try that!

New Years Eve is right around the corner, I will be making my annual Cowboy Caviar, got to have the black eyed peas to ring in the New Year & have good luck!
And also a spicy oyster stew for the husband.

Bacon Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies

Best of both worlds sweet and salty!
This is just a revamped version of my original chocolate chip cookie you can find on the blog-a- rooney!
They are seriously so amazing so moist and gooey, I thought how could it even get better!?!
Well I'm here to tell you it is possible.  One day I thought add some bacon and a little sea salt.
OMG amazing!!!!!!

Come Hang Out In My Garden

So I am patiently waiting for this garden to grow!


I think my garden last year did better then this year, but what are you gonna do!?!
I have some varmints that stole some whole plants out the garden, they even made it past my 2 scarecrow sprinklers, darn them!


We did eat the radishes, they were very good but I learned that I need to plant more.
We have also been enjoying lettuce and green beans. 
I planted more then enough lettuce so every week my son and I cut back the lettuce wash every leaf, bag them up and bring them up to our local food shelf, so hopefully some family is enjoying it besides us :) 



More notes to self on those, plant a crispier lettuce next year and beans that grow up the vine.

I adore the gate my husband made me with the cut out heart, made with boards that helped build our house.

I'm loving the teal chairs that I found at a garage sale last year, a set of 4 I have placed throughout the property decoratively.
Along with the cute garden sign the kiddos gave me for Mothers Day, it flips and I can change the sayings.

Last but not least the old school Maytag washing machine that my friend gave me I turned into a planter, makes a nice addition to the look of the garden.

I am super excited for everything to grow so I can start canning and making other fresh dishes! Jalapeno and banana pepper poppers.  BLTs, fried green tomatoes, cucumber salad, sandwiches, tomato salad just to name a few!

When finished gardening, this is where you will find me!  Usually early evening floating with a beer and a magazine, awh the good life :)


Also a newer item in our yard is the bunnies "castle"!  If you follow me on social media I recently posted a picture of their barn.
What are the bunnies names you wonder?  
Mamas name is Olivia and the brothers are Loki and Thor (Thor is my man back off ladies!)

Coming Soon!

Well I'm super pumped!  Garden is starting to grow, Cucumbers and green beans are climbing the ropes, yellow flowers are popping up on the tomato plants.  Speaking of starting to grow so are the weeds!!  We have gotten a lot of rain and the weeds love that, so this is what we do to keep them down.

This is not my photo just one I found off the internet.  What we do is pull the big weeds, lay down newspaper around the plants then a layer of compost.  Keeps the weeds out wonderfully!  

On another note I got to borrow my Grandmas recipe box, mostly sweets recipes, she keeps most of them in her head.  I scanned those and will be putting together a book of them, sort of a cookbook for the ladies in my family. That might take me a bit but I thought it would be really nice to have, Grandma is 90!

I'm getting super excited for my "Girls Week" vacation in just over a week!  I will be bringing along to share my Rosemary Cashews, we love to munch on them while having cocktails!



One last update, did you catch my last blog post where I did a haul at Trader Joe's? (thats where I buy the cashew's to make this!).

I'll give you a heads up to what's going to be my next blog post, Whole Foods party haul!

1. What are your earliest cooking inspirations? My Grandma, Mom & watching and imitating Julia Child ( I still do!)
2. Where do you live?  What is wonderful about where you call home? The great state of Minnesota!  I have been a city girl my whole life, but am now ready for the country! We get all four seasons and each are amazingly beautiful!

11 Random facts about me:
1. My favorite color is green, just like my sweet Grandma
2. Yes, this is my natural hair color.  
3. I chose my 2 eldest children's names so if they were a boy or a girl it would be easy to switch, My daughter Samantha could have been Samuel & My son Alexander could have been Alexandra (and that is what I thought he was going to be according to all the ultra sounds!)  My last child not so much so, I knew he was a boy, Jackson.  I like long proper names.  
4.  I have been to so many years of nursing school but could never pass anatomy, I could only be an assistant or an aide. It was that darn heart I could not memorize.  
5. I once saved a woman's life by giving her the Heimlich maneuver in a Chinese restaurant, I was so shaken and embarrassed (shy) I ran out of there.
6. I have anxiety about a lot of things that keep me from doing them.  Like driving on the freeway, it's been at least 8 years.  That really sucks.
7. My later years of nursing led me to office work, scheduling surgeries and admitting people to urgent care, I found that I really like that and went into the corporate world and helped run 2 large well to do company's in my area.
8.  I am a freak and have had the chicken pox more than once , shingles, measles and almost choked on a sucker when I was a toddler (mom loves to tell that story)
9.  After 20 years of smoking and 2 tries I have successfully quit, it's been almost 5 years now, and I feel great!  
10. The only concert I have been to is Metallica.

Where is Waldo!?

I just felt like I needed to do an update on why I am not posting so much.
The big reason for not blogging lately is it's gardening season!  And I have a huge garden, lots of work and also planting tons of flowers throughout my property.

I feel like I'm leaving something out........
Husband is growing hops for his new love of brewing, that seems to be taking over the garage, the beer not the hops, those are outside.


Besides having tomatos growing your old fashioned way, I am also trying the hay bail method, thats pretty cool.  I guess it holds the moisture in well so you don't have to water it as much.

2 plants in here, the one on the right is doing better now :)


Like I have shared before we are big into composting so that really helps my garden grow well.  We also have 3 rabbits that help provide for that compost, eewww I know right! Did someone say poop!?

Once my garden starts providing some scrumptious vegetables I will start creating some garden fresh appetizers!

Maybe even share with you my canning processes!  I know super exciting right?!

Alright enough vegetable talk.

I will be having a going away/ girls only party this weekend for my Mom.  And will be coming up with a new chicken dip recipe for that party, Moms favorite dip!  I will talk more about why Mom is moving in that blog post.

Another fun thing coming up for me is in a few weeks I will be taking a week long vacation, happens almost every year.  It's girls week, where all my cousins, aunts, Mom, Grandma, Great Aunt, daughter, niece, rent an awesome cabin on a lake and pig out, drink, shop, float on the lake and play games have bonfires, did I say eat and drink!?  It is an awesome time!

We have another fun trip planned for August too.

Explore Duluth



Happy Spring Break!  We took a quick 3 day trip to Duluth, MN.
We have been there many times over the years.  A nice place to take a vacation, lots to do.
I got to experience a couple things I have never done before on this trip, it was pretty cool!

Duluth is on the shores of Lake Superior, the lake is freezing and goes forever as the eye can see. Just like I imagine the ocean would be (yes sad, sad Angie has never been to the ocean).



Duluth has a downtown area and a peninsula into Lake Superior.  The peninsula is my favorite area.

When we got into town it was lunch time, we skipped breakfast and were famished!
We checked out a place named Fitgers Brewhouse, Brewhouse and restaurant attached to it's hotel. Very old, pretty cool history located downtown Duluth.
Started out with the bacon cheese curds, very interesting, they were square!  Ok tasting, not our favorite.
Little man had a bowl of carrots, basically he munched on to much junk food on the drive there and I made him eat the carrots.
I ordered the Artichoke Dip Chicken Sandwich, very good!
Hubbie had a poutine burger, he has never had poutine, he was not really a fan.
But we would go back and try other items.



For our next adventure we visited a historic mansion named the Glensheen Mansion.  Just amazing. There are different levels of the tour you can purchase.  We went, with the cheapest package, about an hour tour.  Really fun.  Loved it.
You can take a flashlight tour on Friday and Saturday nights, rumor is the home is haunted!
If you're short on monies you can roam the grounds for free!



Both nights we were in Duluth we had dinner at the Canal Park Brewery, it was right next door to the hotel we were staying in, so super convenient! Service was excellent.  We enjoyed everything we ordered.  Beer was awesome, we tried beer flights to see what we liked the most.  Sunday night they had live music, it was so much fun!
Oh, there is a fire pit out on the back patio overlooking the lake, just perfect!


Another new adventure we experienced was the Great Lakes Aquarium, there are two levels to this building.  The upstairs level was my favorite more tropical fish, just beautiful.  This is really a family orientated place, so lots of little ones running around.  And be prepared it really smells like fish! 

The next day we visited another old brewpub, an Irish one at that!   Named Carmody Irish Pub.  
We were so lucky and got an impromptu tour of the brewing system in the basement by the master brewer!  Really cool, dude was super nice.  Nothing fancy at all it was just like the guy next door who was brewing in his basement !  


We did lots of walking along the shore line, finally nice enough to do that.  Walked out to a light house and watched a barge come in.  He blew his horn I just about had a heart attack!



Stopped into my favorite fish shop, you have to go if you're in town and if you're not, you can always order online!  Northern Waters Smokehaus.

So if you're ever planning a trip to Minnesota hope you can make it to Duluth!

Eastlake Craft Brewery


Friday night date night, checked out the newer Eastlake Craft Brewery in the Global Market, Uptown Minneapolis.

Awesome location.  Love the decor here, nice dark wood, lots of dead animals on the wall :)



And it is in the Global Market, have you been there?  It's pretty awesome.  You can get prepared foods from around the world all in the same building.

Eastlake Craft Brewery really have an awesome gig going on.  If you're hungry pick up some food and bring in on into their brewery.  There are a couple thing that these guys will go pick up for you too and deliver to your bar stool too.  Love it!

This place is awesome for people watching, I love people and you get all sorts here!

The guys who work there work their butts off and are super informative.

Ok about the beer, fantastic!!!  I saw they had flights, I will have to do that next time.

But, I tried the L'Ogre De Turvueren, I have no clue how to say that!  But damn it's good!



Husband had the Increasingly Lost Saison and the Gustav Mauler's Fifth.



We brought in a couple of growlers (clean) and they filled them up with a couple more beers.  Sweet deal if you ask me!

There are some games behind the bar, I saw they have Cards Against Humanity, so naughty ;)  Love it!

Bloggin'

Oh lord help me!  So many changes with my blog host and and I'm trying to start a Facebook page for the blog.
I feel like an old person I'm having so many issues with technology, ARGH (nothing against elderly, love ya) !!! Thinking I'll go over to my old pal Youtube watch some helpful videos.
Seriously what did we do before all this technology at our fingertips, all the answers so easily!

I have noticed lately that the views on my restaurant review are way more then my appetizer recipes.

Hummm I question why, totally not complaining just trying to figure it out.
Are you still there, just listening to me think out loud?

Ok talking about restaurant reviews, spring break is coming up I will be heading out of town for a few days, there will be some new restaurant reviews :)

I have so many recipes I'm working on and will get those out soon.

Let's see what else is new lots of changes in life around here besides the blog.  Family and neighbors moving.  My sons school is moving next year, pain in the butt because it's blocks away from where we live now.  Guess we can't be lucky all the time!

Wow this kinda sounds like a bitch fest.  Sorry friends just venting.   Deep breaths!

Positive thoughts, kids are all awesome, weather is great, I have an awesome husband.  And a wonderful life.  Ahh I feel better.

I feel like I need to throw a picture in here so here is a funky picture of a shop my Mom and I went to today.  Hunt and Gather 49th and Xerxes in Minneapolis, that shop is to much fun.  But, beware one wrong move you brake a million things!

Up North Minnesota


So this is not exactly a restaurant review it's sort of a festival, vacation spot sorta review with a restaurant review with in!

Winters are long you have to get out when you can and enjoy the great outdoors or you will just go mad, so thats what we did loaded up the truck with winter gear and headed "up north" to the EelPout Festival in Walker, MN!

The craziest ideas usually are the best ideas and this festival has been going on over over 30 years!

All sorts of events packed into a 3 day festival on Leech Lake fish races, polar plunges, helicopter rides, lots to eat and drink just to name a few.
There are hundreds of ice fishing house lined up on Leech Lake, tents, snowmobile, sleigh rides and all sorts of hooptyrides.  It's just one big party!



It has been a long long time since I walked on a frozen lake but I did not chicken out, it was way too much fun to pass up on.

We have been doing a lot of weekend trips lately and I tell you the more north you go in the state the friendlier the people are, I love it "Minnesota Nice" is still alive!

Food wise we had their jalapeno cheese curds out of a food truck they were AMAZING!  I would not have called this a curd because the cheese was melted, usually cheese curds are more solid or stringy. We also tried the mini donuts, really good well the couple that I pried away from my son.
We wanted to try some eelpout nuggets but could not find them.  (next year!)



We had to stay in a neighboring town of Park Rapids because, Walker's hotels were booked up and I'm sure they had been for a while.

My neighbor used to live in Park Rapids and still has lots of family & friends there.  I asked her where is the best place to get a burger she suggested the Royal Bar, we totally walked by it a couple times because the outside of the building did not look like a bar.
Do you remember the old Pannekoeken Restaurants?  Swedish themed white & blue, thats what the exterior looks like.

The Royal Bar gives you that small town vibe where "everyone knows your name" sorta place.
We had worked up an appetite doing all that walking on the lake.

To start we ordered the battered mushrooms served with ranch, SO good!



The kiddo ordered the mini corn dogs, and gobbled them right up.
We ordered Royal California Burger, basically it's a california burger.  Marc added jalapenos too his burger.  We got a basket of fri's to share, the food was really good!! Really nice staff and fun people watching.  Oh bring cash, no debit or credit here.

Before dinner we stopped at a few shops, I picked up a few fun things for the home. Everything was so reasonably priced too.
All the shop owners and workers were so friendly the last store we went into was a hoot!
It was a couple that owned it they were hilarious!  I swear they wanted us to come visit their home to see the all the deer they have on their property!  This shops name is Whatnot.

The Tin Ceiling was a shop we visited, everything in the store is donated and proceeded go to the disabled.  I picked up a beautiful bedspread there for $19!!!  In mint condition I may add.

The last shop I stopped in was named Rust to Roses, beautiful store, It screamed Pintrest Ideas!

In the summer there are so many activities to do in Park Rapids and Walker too, I go to Walker every summer it's a hoppin place.

On our way home we stopped at one of two family owned butcher shops.  Theilen Meats, such a great selection and prices you can not beat!  And the flavor - awesome!!!

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies


I KNOW, what!?!?  Chocolate Chip Cookie on an appetizer blog?

Well I just had to share with you what I made today, it's about my 8th time making these and they are so frickin awesome!
I have told you before I am not really a baker but I am working on that.
I stumbled across this almost fail proof ( I say that because I can make it it's foolproof) chocolate chip cookie recipe a while back on my fav Pintrest.
This girl has a recipe for a moist cookie or a crunchy chocolate chip cookie, every time I go for the moist cookie.

I have been posting so many restaurant reviews lately I thought I better give you something you can make and I think just about everyone likes a chocolate chip cookie!

I do have a couple new appetizers I will be making soon so don't you fret.

And please take note of my adorable new cow towel!?  DO you just love it?  :)  I picked that up at William Sonoma.




AND if I don't say so myself I think my pictures are greatly improving, way to keep up the New Years Eve resolution (pat on back).

So here is what you need:
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp cornstarch
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 large egg + 2 egg yolks
1 TBS vanilla extract
2 cups chocolate chips


How to make them:
Preheat your oven to 350 once you are done mixing everything together
Mix your flour, cornstarch, salt, baking powder and baking soda together in a mixing bowl, set aside
In another bowl mix butter and both sugars, cream together for 4 minutes until fluffy
Next add the eggs one at a time and then add the vanilla beat until smooth
Now in intervals of 3 add the flour
Incorporate your chocolate chips until everything is well mixed.
Place the bowl of dough into the fridge for at least an hour.
You should have preheated your oven to 350 by now
Scoop cookie dough into tablespoon amounts onto a nonstick cookie sheet about 2 inches apart
Bake 10 to 12 minutes

Update

Sorry today I don't have a recipe to share today,  I just wanted to give you all an update on a couple things.

I'm trying my best to improve my blog and my photos yugh that is a whole nother ball of wax (who says that anyhow?).

I've been reading articles, bought books and special lights (waiting for the husband to set those up) practiced, practiced, practiced taking photos.  I think if I get a good picture, it was pure luck!

I have accepted that I just don't take good photos.  But I won't give up yet!

I am working on creating a few new recipes that I am excited about,  and will share with you soon!

I did make a really good one last night, I got 1, hubbie got 1,  I left the room for a bit came back and they were all gone!  My 12 year old ate them all!  So they are a winner people, you will like them!

So it's winter (duh) and I am going a little stir crazy already, I keep busy but, I want to get out more. Recently I have been circling things in my seed catalog and dreaming about my garden, getting the spring itch!

So a little bit more about me I will share with you is that 13 years ago we lived in a tiny little house on a large lot of property, we had 2 small children and another on the way.
Well we decided to build a great big house to raise our children in.
And here we are 2 children have flown the coop and we have 1 left in this great big empty house that we love so much.

My Babies (Samantha, Jackson and Alexander)



My son is in the 6th grade, and has been going to school from Kindergarten until now at the same school and will until the 8th grade.  We do not not like the High School choices in our area, So we have been considering moving to our next dream home.

We had a fun idea every weekend we can, we head a new direction in our state to explore cities.  This past weekend we went west, surprisingly we had never been west that we could remember.  Well needless to say we did not find any where that we really liked.

So our adventure continues, heck we have time!

Well there you have it, now you know me a little better.

Cracker Crust Pizza



Kids can be such picky eaters!  My 2 older children will never give eggplant another chance for the rest of their lives thanks to me forcing them to eat it years ago when they were young kids.
And my youngest has a list of foods that he will eat that you can count off on both your hands!
And pizza is one of the top 3!
This pizza he is in love with and I have to agree the crust is perfect!

I tend to shy away from making breads, doughs , sweets etc.... I have not had the best of luck in that department.

This pizza crust was pretty much fool proof, that made me SO happy!  Pat on back!

I am still cooking my way through Amy Thielen's cookbook that I bought myself last summer, so glad that I did too!

In her book there is a tomato sauce that accompanies her Cracker Crust Pizza, I didn't try that with mine only because I have jars upon jars of my own I canned this summer. Yes I can, I started doing that 2 years ago I believe.  I grow TONS of tomatoes, usually 3 variations.  And plenty of other veggies.
Talking about my garden is making me anxious for spring to come!  I have been circling seeds in my gardening catalog recently.

So this is what you will need to make Amy's Cracker Crust:

3/4 Cup Cool Water
1/4 Cup Canola oil
1 Teaspoon fine sea salt (I used sea salt, it did not say fine)
1 Teaspoon sugar
2 Cups flour + Flour for your work space
Parchment paper

How to make it:
Preheat your oven to 500 degrees, with your pizza plate or cookie sheet in the oven.
Start by adding the first 4 ingredients into a bowl and mix well.
Add in 1 cup of flour and whisk until smooth.
Add your next cup of flour and blend in with a wooden spoon.
Flour your work space (a clean surface) and knead your dough for a good 5 minutes.
Now divide that dough into 3 sections making 3 round disk shapes.
Place those onto a wooden surface (cutting board).
And cover with a kitchen towel from 30 minutes to 3 hours. I waited 45 minutes because I had a hungry kiddo and had to get cooking.




Take a sheet of parchment paper and lay down a disk of dough, lay another piece of parchment paper on top of your dough, now start rolling until the dough is approximately 12 inches.
I was hoping my dough would be a round shape like a pizza but I ended up with an oval shape but you know what it tastes the same once it's cooked!
Brush your dough lightly with olive oil and pinch the outer edges of the pizza dough inwards.
Time to start building your pizza! My son's favorite part.  His pizza's take a hot minute to make, sauce, pepperoni and cheese!  But you put any toppings you like on yours sausage, peppers, mushrooms etc.



Bake your pizza for 15-18 minutes

Most Popular Appetizers 2014



So last year I did my top 5 viewed appetizers of 2013, this year I thought I better keep that tradition and share with you my most viewed appetizers of 2014! (but I see that all the bloggers seem to have this brilliant idea too LOL!)
So Happy New Year to you all and thank you so much for sticking around and continuing to read my not so perfect blog, I am still learning!
I love to cook and especially appetizers!  I am far from the best photographer so that is my new years resolution to work on my photography skills.
I also what to share with you that I have been trying to think of a new blog name because I eventually would like to expand my blog into more then just appetizers and restaurant reviews!
What do you think, would you like that?!
Any suggestions on names??
I have been thinking about a revamp of the whole page!  Even down to a Logo, I have had my Mom helping me with that she is an awesome artist :)

#4  Slow Roasted Tomato and Feta Spread

This one totally reminds me of summer, kinda starting to miss summer as I hear the wind howling against my house and see the snow blowing about



#3  Rosemary Cheddar Crackers

Rosemary is one of my new favorite herbs, I have some growing in my kitchen, I love that I can cut them fresh whenever I want!  These crackers are totally worth the wait in making them!



#2  Vegetable Pizza

This fresh vegetable pizza with a flakey crust is so awesome, I could eat the whole pan of this, so good!!  People have been making this appetizer for years!



#1  Low Fat Taco Bean Dip

I love an easy go to taco dip, so full of flavor and this one is better for you than most, I really like this!  And who doesn't like taco dip!?
